Movers & Groovers

Occupational Therapy led group program, promoting rhythmic action and social participation

Movers & Groovers is an Occupational Therapy led group program, promoting rhythmic action and social participation. The melodic and rhythmic patterns in music can help to exercise our brains to assist in developing memory and listening skills. Music evokes movement in our bodies which is crucial for the development and growth of young people. Movers & Groovers uses these movements to teach and develop body language in young people as an alternative form of communicating emotions and feelings.

Through large body movements, quick adjustments to movement and a focus on balance, Movers & Groovers aims to develop individuals gross motor skills. There is also a focus on social skill development through the introduction of using body language to communicate with others.

Facilitated by our Occupational Therapy team and supported by our Mentor team, Movers & Groovers provides young people with trained adult support and role modelling to assist in developing:

  • Body and Spatial Awareness
  • Building awareness of self-regulation and calming strategies
  • Gross Motor Skills
  • Attentive Listening
